WASHING CLOTH FACE MASKS

With school back in session, make sure your family’s cloth face masks are properly cleaned. If you didn’t know, masks should be washed after each use. It is important to always remove masks correctly and wash your hands after handling or touching a used mask.

WASHING MACHINE

If you are using a washing machine to launder your face masks, you can include them with your regular laundry. When you use a washing machine, you can use regular detergent and the warmest appropriate water setting for the cloth used to make the mask. It’s usually best to air dry them or dry them in a protective laundry pouch, as you would delicates.

HAND WASHING

To wash your cloth face mask, first start by preparing a bleach solution by mixing: 1/3rd cup household bleach per gallon of room temperature water or four teaspoons household bleach per quart of room temperature water.

Before you pull the first bleach product out of the cabinet, make sure you check the label to see if the bleach product is intended for disinfection. Some bleach products are designed to be safe to use on colored clothing, which may make them unsuitable for disinfection. Never mix household bleach with ammonia or any other cleanser. Following mixing the cleaning solution, begin the cleaning process by soaking the mask in the solution for 5 minutes. After five minutes, rinse your masks thoroughly with cool or room temperature water.
Now that the masks are washed, its time to dry! There are two different ways to properly dry your face mask.

DRYER

If you chose to use your dryer, make sure that you are selecting the highest heat setting and leave your masks in the dryer until they are completely dry.

AIR DRY

To air-dry, your masks simply lay them flat and allow them to dry completely. If it is possible, place your air drying masks into direct sunlight.
